Bicyclist hit by a car in serious New York City car accident

New York – A bicycle accident sent the injured bicyclist to the hospital with severe and life threatening injuries. The car crash occurred on the busy streets of lower Manhattan when a car crashed into a bicycle delivery worker. The pizza deliveryman was thrown after the bicycle slammed into the windshield of the car and then hit the ground. The injured worker cyclist reportedly suffered a head injury with possible traumatic brain injury (TBI). The head injury will require extensive evaluations to determine if there’s any intracranial hemorrhaging or bleeding. A TBI is a type of brain damage that can be mild, moderate, severe or even life threatening in severity. Evaluation includes neurological and cognitive testing and often includes a cat scan (CT scan) of the brain and possibly magnetic resonance imaging (an MRI scan) to look for bleeding, hematoma and other signs of trauma. More serious cases of non-fatal TBI head injuries can leave an injury victim permanently disabled and unable to work or function. Cognitive disabilities from even more mild concussions that cause a post-concussive disorder (PCD) or syndrome can leave people with memory difficulty, emotional and personality changes as well as severe headaches, dizziness and visual disturbances. Some PCD symptoms and injuries require in depth evaluations by a neurologist, neuropsychologist and therapists. You can find out more about this worker’s injury during this bicycle crash here.

Injured accident victims when a jeep crashes into a storefront

New York – A bagel store in Westchester was the scene of a surprising car crash that left at least three injury victims. The driver of a jeep was apparently leaving the parking lot, having been parked in a spot directly in front of the restaurant in New Rochelle, NY. It is believed that the driver became confused when he put the car into drive instead of reverse and then pressed the gas. This caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and slam into the storefront and hit several pedestrian workers in the store. It ripped apart the entire front of the store when the vehicle jumped the curb and drove through the front glass wall. The pedestrian accident left the workers injured and in need of emergency evaluation for unclear wounds. The injured workers were not the only ones who suffered wounds during the motor vehicle accident (MVA), as the driver of the vehicle also suffered accident injuries. The injured workers will likely be treated using their worker’s compensation insurance, also referred to as worker’s comp. However, in certain circumstances such a car collision at work is treated using the car insurance policy. See this article for further information about this MVA.

New York City construction accident injures and kills workers

New York – Several workers were injured on the job when a construction scaffolding accident sent debris slamming down onto the men. One of the injured workers suffered fatal injuries and died from his wounds at the hospital after doctors attempted to resuscitate him. The other work injury victims were also treated for their accident injuries according to authorities. The construction collapse seems to have occurred when a section of a wall or fencing fell from the rooftop of a building that was undergoing repairs. The facade had sections of scaffolding rigged to it when the falling debris hit the scaffold equipment and caused an equipment failure. Specifics of the mechanism of injury are still unclear. However, it is believed that either the men fell from the scaffold or that the falling metal, brick and concrete sections collapsed and crushed the workers. Further investigations into the cause and nature of this workplace accident with injuries will be necessary to prevent further wrongful death cases. At least two of the injured workmen have been noted to be in serious condition, with possible head injury, broken bones and possible internal organ damage and bleeding. Internal bleeding can sometimes be difficult to diagnose initially. Read up more about this work accident here.

Construction work accident in Lower East Side of Manhattan

New York – A wall collapsed at a construction site this week. The construction accident left one injured worker fighting for his life after he suffered crush injuries. He had to be extricated from under the broken and fallen debris. Responders say that he had a leg injury with possible broken bones or crush fractures. Doctors in the hospital have reported that the injury victim is still in serious condition. A second construction worker suffered fatal injuries after he was trapped under the collapsed wall. It is believed that the wounded man sustained a serious head injury with traumatic brain injury. However, he may have also suffered internal injuries with internal bleeding.

Investigators have been researching the cause of the construction collapse. They will need to determine if negligence was involved, specifically to investigate the use of proper safety equipment. Employers are required to provide their employees with safety equipment such as hardhat helmets, goggle eye protection, harnesses and reinforcement scaffolding when needed. In addition, they are supposed to provide extensive safety training to their workers in order to prevent such work accidents. This particular building was undergoing renovations at the time of the collapse. It is not fully clear but it appears that the workmen were attempting to reinforce the wall at the time of the wall caved in. however, it is unclear why the workers were standing right underneath an unstable wall. Injured worker from hit-and-run accident on Long Island

New York – A workman who was collecting garbage was hit by a car according to the victim’s report. The driver of the car admits that his vehicle made contact with the worker but he described in as a minor accident. He explains that this was the reason he left the scene of the accident with injuries. Police then looked into the hit-and-run collision and questioned the driver. The driver has placed the blame for the pedestrian accident on the sanitation worker. He noted that the side mirror casing of the car is what hit the victim. The worker who was injured on the job has reported that he suffered a hand injury. Trauma specialists explain that this type of mechanism of collision can lead to various injuries, including broken bones or fractures, ligament and tendon injury or even nerve damage or vascular wounds. Further investigation into both the injuries and liability for the crash is necessary to determine fault and a causal relationship. However, some believe that the driver may have been negligent and that his fleeing the scene of the crash was criminal. A top New York personal injury lawyer notes that the employer most likely is required to carry worker’s compensation insurance. This worker’s comp carrier often must pay for medical care while the victim works out the legal aspect in court. See this article for more about this work injury.

One worker injured, another killed in Midtown Manhattan construction accident

New York – Two workers were crushed in a construction accident this week. One was a security guard who was killed and the other a construction worker who suffered on-the-job injuries when an unstable section of glass fell on them. The scene of the accident was on a loading dock of a construction site on West 57th Street in Manhattan. The piece of glass was standing up and was supposed to be installed into a tall skyscraper office building. For an unknown reason, the heavy glass panel tipped over and collapsed onto the two workers below. The crush injuries suffered by the security guard left him with multiple and severe wounds, including internal injuries and possibly a traumatic brain injury. He went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead by doctors in the hospital shortly after. The second injured worker was also rushed from the scene to the emergency room and treated for several injuries, including broken bones with a foot injury. The type of fracture may require surgery to repair the damage according to doctors. The New York City building’s department shut down the construction site and issued a safety violation to owner of the site. Additional investigation into the cause of the construction collapse will be needed to determine if negligence was involved. This includes determining if all equipment and construction debris was properly secured to prevent slipping and falling. See this article for more details.

Construction work accident in Queens leaves 6 injured workers

New York – A scaffolding collapse in the middle of a construction site in Long Island City, Queens caused mayhem this week. Six workers were injured during the construction accident and were rushed to the emergency room. Hospital officials confirmed that the accident victims suffered a back injury, possible broken bones and arm and leg injuries. Reports note that the workers were pouring concrete into wooden forms to create a floor when it collapsed. Concerned safety advocates explain that the owner and developer of the building may have been negligent in the management of the project. They note that the New York City’s buildings department placed an emergency stop order on the construction when they noticed several dangerous safety violations. It has been pointed out that the same work site has a history of multiple complaints filed with the Department of Buildings since the new owner took it over in 2015. More research will be needed to determine if, in fact, the developer had created a hazardous situation that placed the safety of his employees and the public at risk for injury. Employers are responsible to obtain worker’s compensation insurance in order to deal with these types of work accidents. However, this doesn’t absolve them of their duty to prevent accidents and avoid negligence. More details about this building collapse accident can be found here.

Queens construction accident leaves injured worker with crush injuries

New York – Work crews were working at a construction site in the Kew Gardens neighborhood of Queens when a heavy metal beam fell onto a worker. The crush victim suffered leg injuries, including multiple broken bones in his legs after being trapped under the metal beam. The heavy steal I-beam was being used as a hammer by a crane to drive metal supports into the ground when it fell. According to witnesses, the hammer beam was suspended by the crane’s cable that broke. Investigators are looking into the reason for this apparent equipment failure that caused the accident. Experts say that the crane and its cable may not have been properly rated to hold such a heavy object such as this seven ton beam. However, other possibilities include that negligent maintenance or safety inspections could have led to the catastrophic collapse and the hardhat worker’s subsequent crush injury. The injury victim was rescued from the work accident site and taken to Jamaica Hospital for emergency treatment. To find out more about this worker’s comp injury, see this article.
