New York City a dangerous place for bicyclists

New York – Bicycle accidents are a known hazard for bikers, pedestrians and motorists alike. Unfortunately, bike crash incidents occur all of the time on the busy city streets, causing serious accident injuries and even wrongful deaths. Public safety advocates say that the city, police and many drivers share negligent responsibility for these accidents. They believe that the proper steps to secure the roads are not taken despite the known hazardous condition created for innocent bicycle riders that also need to share the roads. This is how many get to work, do deliveries, make their way to shopping and overall just get around. Activists contend that department of transportation officials must do a proper job of designing safe streets, maintain roads and parking zones according to basic safety standards and must identify and repair known danger zones. Negligent maintenance is an obvious safety hazard that should be addressed by city officials. In addition, NYPD police officers have a responsibility to actively make the streets safer by stopping and ticketing or towing dangerous drivers and keeping bicycle lanes open and clear of illegally parked cars and trucks. This can prevent bike versus car accidents. The sanitation department also shares responsibility to maintain clean and safe streets and bike lanes without dangerous debris that can lead to a collision or injury. This article shares more about the dangers and difficulties that often lead to bicycle and pedestrian accidents.

Bicycle accident responsible for another preventable traffic fatality

New York – Yet another bicyclist died in a bike crash in Brooklyn. The rider was hit by a car during a car crash that caused serious injuries. The bicycle rider apparently had gone through an intersection with a stop sign and was struck by the car. He sustained a severe head injury with and was taken to the hospital. Details regarding the nature of his accident injuries are unclear but he apparently suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Hospital officials report that the injured bicyclist was treated for his injuries for several days but ended up dying from those wounds. It is believed that the brain damage, or TBI, caused by the car accident left the man critically injured and certainly contributed to his death. Other internal injuries or bleeding has not been fully ruled out at this point.

New York City traffic safety advocates say that this was yet another preventable traffic accident. They believe that this car crash led to the wrongful death of the rider. The responsibility to create and maintain safe roads, including bicycle lanes, is the responsibility of the city transportation board. Some feel that they have not done enough to build and properly maintain acceptable safety standards in order to protect pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. They note that drivers need to have clear designations as to where to drive and how to maintain safety in order to protect others sharing the roads. Clear road signs are not always present or visible. At the same time, road maintenance crews must be dispatched to fix damaged and dangerous sections of road and intersections. Some feel that negligent maintenance has created a hazardous situation for everyone on the road. You can check out more about this bicycle crash and another deadly pedestrian accident here.

Rash of rental electric scooter accidents in New York City

New York – Electric moped scooters are a new rage in the rental and sharing market in the city. However, they have been involved in an increasing number of Revel electric scooter crashes according to news reports. Officials say that reckless drivers and other possible safety concerns have been implicated in these recent motor vehicle accidents. Concern has risen for the lack of safety equipment and warnings as well as training in the safe operation of these potentially dangerous electric vehicles. Pedestrians and motorists alike have expressed outrage regarding the dangerous condition that these vehicles have created. Pedestrian accidents with these moped scooters can cause serious injuries and even wrongful death. One woman was killed in an accident after she was thrown from one of these scooters. The accident injuries from these crashes can include bone fractures, head injury and spinal injuries as well as internal bleeding. Experts warn that the market must be well regulated and safety must be the foremost concern – safety of the riders, pedestrians, bicyclists and even cars and trucks on the roads. Special care and tracking must ensure that these high speed mopeds are not driven on sidewalks, in parks or other areas frequented by pedestrians and children. In addition, concern regarding proper safety equipment and preventative maintenance of these vehicles are essential. Negligent maintenance can easily lead to catastrophic results including injury, permanent disability and death. The seriousness of the current hazardous situation has led to the Revel company suspending the use of their vehicle sharing network in New York City. Check out this article for more about these moped accidents and the program suspension.

Bronx car accident injures multiple victims, including bicyclist and pedestrians

New York – What appears to be a speeding car with a reckless driver behind the wheel was caught on video causing a serious pedestrian accident. A dash camera from an uninvolved motorist caught the frightening car crash on video. A Bronx native was identified as the driver of a car that possibly even ran through a red light at a busy intersection beneath the train tracks. While racing his vehicle through the intersection, a group of pedestrians and bicyclists had already been attempting to cross within the crosswalk. The car seemed to have come from nowhere with little-to-no warning and hit a bicycle with rider on it as well as several pedestrians. The bicycle accident left that rider seriously injured and it is reported that several pedestrians, including several local workers, were also hurt in the collision. This car crash is still under investigation and the driver was brought up on charges for the collision. See the video and find out more about this reckless driving accident with multiple injuries here.

Police officers injured on the job in car crash

A car accident occurred on the highway leading to the Holland Tunnel approach into New York City. This set the scene for a subsequent car crash that injured several police officers. Reports show that responding police officers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as Jersey City police departments were at the scene of the initial car collision. They were taking care of the accident scene and injured driver when another vehicle lost control and hit a barrier. That vehicle then hit one of the policemen and a police car, causing multiple accident injuries. The pedestrian accident caused one officer to suffer with serious injuries and several other cops suffered injuries as well. It is unclear why the two accidents occurred but specialists explain that distracted drivers often cause secondary collisions like this. They note that drivers often concentrate on the initial accident scene and flashing emergency lights and lose control over their vehicle. This is one of the reasons that many states, including New York, have created “move over laws” that require drivers to move over an extra lane on the highway or roadway when possible. This allows police, EMTs, paramedics and fire fighters a safer work environment. The prevention of workplace accidents and a work injury in these types of environments is challenging but necessary. On the job injuries are usually covered by worker’s compensation insurance. However, these insurance coverages can often lack a fair process or control to patients over their healthcare. Some find it necessary to hire a workers comp lawyer to help them fight for their rights. You can read more about this work injury here.

Car recall announced due to dangerous defective part

Car safety experts are warning about a potentially deadly faulty part that was installed on some Mercedes-Benz cars. This has led to a product safety recall of these vehicles in order to try to repair the hazardous situation. The specific models of cars involved in the product recall have been determined to have used a faulty bonding glue that attaches the sunroof to the vehicle. The glue material has been shown to break down and can cause the sunroof to break off. Concerned car safety specialists say that this can cause a dangerous car accident if the sunroof goes flying at high speeds. It can hit another car or cause a pedestrian accident. It can also cause the driver of the car to lose control and crash, leading to accident injuries or even wrongful death. It is unclear at this point if any car crash incidents have been linked to this potentially dangerous product. See this article for further details about this car recall.

Building facade collapse kills woman on Manhattan sidewalk

New York – Building debris collapsed down onto the sidewalk below in Midtown Manhattan just two days ago. A heavy section of facade apparently fell off of the face of the building and collapsed onto the pedestrians walking below. At least one section of rubble struck a 60-year-old woman, causing her to lose consciousness. She reportedly suffered a head injury with traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the deadly accident. Emergency responders arrived to find the woman in cardiac arrest from the accident injuries. They believe the traumatic arrest was due to a skull fracture with massive bleeding in her brain. Emergency medical services attempted to resuscitate the injury victim but were unsuccessful according to witnesses. Her injuries were so severe that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene according to officials.

Citizens in New York City expressed concern for their safety when hearing about this tragedy. No one expects debris to suddenly fall from the sky. City safety inspectors from the buildings department had cited this very building’s owner for an apparently related safety hazard. Records show that this building owner was issued a ticket for improper maintenance of the building’s facade only around eight months ago. They apparently paid the fine but it is unclear whether the underlying hazardous condition was fully addressed. A safety law in New York City requires proper professional inspections of the facade of buildings every five years minimally in order to prevent a dangerous situation similar to this pedestrian accident. Building inspectors will continue their investigation into this tragedy to determine the cause of the accident with fatal injuries. In the meantime, a scaffolding was constructed around the building to prevent another immediate accident or wrongful death. You can see this article for more.

Multi-vehicle car crash injures several people

New York – Injury victims from several vehicles involved in a car accident were taken to the emergency room in Brooklyn last week. According to witnesses, the driver of one of the cars was speeding and possibly even ran through a red light, causing the collision. The investigation into the exact cause of the motor vehicle accident is ongoing. However, sources say that at least one pedestrian was struck by a car during the series of events that took place during the accident. The pedestrian accident left that victim with multiple injuries, including possible broken bones and spinal injury according to one assessment. The other accident victims were occupants of the vehicles according to police and the extent of their injuries is still unclear. Doctors say that none of the injuries are life threatening but can lead to permanent injuries and disabilities. Further examinations will be necessary to determine further. Trauma specialists say that some injuries can be quite obvious and present themselves immediately following the collision. However, other wounds can take weeks or even months to fully identify. These include herniated disc problems, nerve injury, ligament and tendon damage or even some fractures. In addition, there are the emotional and psychological injuries and trauma of such an accident that can take a good deal of time to develop and treat. Examples of this can include post-traumatic stress disorder and adjustment disorder. See this article shares more about the speeding car accident that possibly ran a red light.

Electric bicycle accident leaves one dead and another injured in Central Park

New York – An intersection in Central Park was the scene of a pedestrian struck by an electric bicycle. The cyclist apparently lost control of his e-bike and crashed into an elderly pedestrian and then both fell to the ground. The electric bicycle driver suffered a severe head injury with traumatic brain injury. He subsequently died of his bike accident injuries according to doctors. Reports show that the injured bicyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. According to New York City laws, it is actually illegal to ride an e-bike or electric scooter on city streets and sidewalks. Pedestrian and public safety activists explain that the speed and recklessness of those driving electric bikes and scooters poses a danger to public safety. They contend that this type of accident is all too common and must be prevented. The pedestrian hit in this case suffered injuries but is expected to survive. However, activists say, the next accident victim may not be so lucky. In the meantime, the rider killed in the accident demonstrates in vivid reality the dangerous situation created for everyone involved. Many cases have been documented of riders texting while driving or talking on a cell phone while driving. These distracted drivers can cause horrible accidents and injuries due to the speed and problems of bicyclists who weave in and around traffic and pedestrians.

Proper statistics are hard to determine but there seems to be an easygoing attitude when it comes to these electric bicycles and scooters. Many riders treat them as children’s toys while they are capable of very fast speeds and cause injuries and wrongful death. Many drivers can be seen not holding on with both hands or maintaining control and concentration over their driving. It is still unclear whether or not this specific driver was guilty of being a reckless driver or who had the right-of-way at the time of the crash. Further details of this pedestrian accident and debate over the legalities of these electric vehicles are discussed here.
