Apparent reckless driver kills unborn baby, injures mother in car crash

New York – Staten Island’s Hylan Boulevard was the scene of a horrific two-car motor vehicle accident (MVA). One of the cars, an SUV, was apparently speeding when the driver lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into another vehicle. The driver of that first car suffered accident injuries, including a possible broken bone. However, the second vehicle, also an SUV, contained two accident victims that suffered much more severe injuries. The male driver of that car suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital. His female front-seated passenger was pregnant at the time of the SUV accident and was also rushed to a trauma center. Doctors were forced to perform an emergency cesarean section delivery of the baby in an attempt to save the baby’s life. However, hospital officials explain that the newborn infant died of the injuries sustained in the MVA. The nature of the fatal wounds is still under investigation. Officials investigating the car collision believe that the first car was being driven by a reckless driver and that led to the SUV crash. The reckless driving together with the fact that the man was an unlicensed speeding driver has many concerned. Safety advocates have demanded immediate action to remove dangerous drivers from the roads and justice in this wrongful death case. Find out more about the collision and investigation here.

Fire department vehicle rear ended in New York highway accident

New York – The fire police vehicle was on the scene of a car accident on a busy highway when it was struck from the rear by another vehicle. Initial reports showed that the firefighter was still in his SUV vehicle stopped behind another fire apparatus after having responded to a motor vehicle accident (MVA) with injuries. However, another motorist apparently didn’t stop or move over and rear ended the fire department SUV despite the activated emergency lights on the car. It is unclear why this MVA occurred or whether the female driving the car was a distracted driver. Investigation will be necessary to determine whether or not the fire department had provided adequate warning to other drivers regarding the dangerous situation ahead. The firefighter was injured and the driver of the other car also suffered various injuries, including spinal injuries and a head injury. In addition, the car had a child passenger that was injured in the SUV accident. The injured parties were extricated and transported by ambulance from the scene of the car crash. They were taken to a regional hospital emergency department for evaluation. Find out more about this rear end collision and the accident injury here.

George Washington Bridge driver suffers head injury from flying debris

New York – A piece of metal went flying through the air and slammed into the windshield of a car, causing a serious head injury to the driver. It is unclear about where exactly the metal debris fell from but it is believed that the metal broke off from or flew out of the back of a dump truck. Falling debris has long been a concern of drivers on busy highways, especially for those travelling behind construction vehicles, dump trucks and garbage trucks that often transport dangerous garbage and loose debris. If the load is not properly contained or tied down, the combination of high speeds, wind and bumpy roads with potholes can be a recipe for disaster. In addition, there is concern that this piece of metal may have broken off of a truck that underwent improper maintenance. However, some feel that this metal object could have been kicked up from the ground after the truck struck a piece of roadside garbage. This dangerous condition requires constant cleaning of garbage and debris from public roadways by state and local government staff to prevent a car crash or injury such as this.

The driver of the car that was hit by the object was rushed from the scene by ambulance to a trauma center. He suffered a severe head injury with possible traumatic brain injury (TBI) according to injury specialists. Doctors will need to perform additional testing, including CAT scan and possible MRI scans to further evaluate the car accident victim’s condition. A TBI can cause mild problems such as a simple concussion with post-concussion symptoms like headaches, dizziness and memory problems. However, more serious cases can include loss of consciousness, vomiting, visual disturbances and even intracranial bleeding. The latter problem of a brain bleed may necessitate emergency neurosurgery. All of these types of TBI can lead to permanent injury and even disability. Queens bus accident injures passengers

New York – MTA transit officials report that a New York City bus was involved in a bus crash this week. The motor vehicle accident (MVA) occurred when a car collided together with the bus. The force of the car accident caused the bus driver to apparently lose control. The bus jumped the curb and crashed into a wall. Multiple passengers in the bus were thrown about and fell during the collision. Trauma doctors note that this type of mechanism of injury increases the types and severity of injuries that can be suffered during the crash. They note that there are primary, secondary and tertiary impacts that can lead to carious injuries such as spinal injury, head injury with traumatic brain injury, broken bones or fractures and internal organ damage. This latter category can include liver laceration or a spleen laceration with internal bleeding or even a tension pneumothorax that can be life threatening. The other car involved in the car crash had most of the front of the vehicle ripped right off and crushed. Specifics about the injuries suffered by the accident victims are not available at the time of this report. You can see this article for more details about this MVA with injuries.

Building facade collapse kills woman on Manhattan sidewalk

New York – Building debris collapsed down onto the sidewalk below in Midtown Manhattan just two days ago. A heavy section of facade apparently fell off of the face of the building and collapsed onto the pedestrians walking below. At least one section of rubble struck a 60-year-old woman, causing her to lose consciousness. She reportedly suffered a head injury with traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the deadly accident. Emergency responders arrived to find the woman in cardiac arrest from the accident injuries. They believe the traumatic arrest was due to a skull fracture with massive bleeding in her brain. Emergency medical services attempted to resuscitate the injury victim but were unsuccessful according to witnesses. Her injuries were so severe that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene according to officials.

Citizens in New York City expressed concern for their safety when hearing about this tragedy. No one expects debris to suddenly fall from the sky. City safety inspectors from the buildings department had cited this very building’s owner for an apparently related safety hazard. Records show that this building owner was issued a ticket for improper maintenance of the building’s facade only around eight months ago. They apparently paid the fine but it is unclear whether the underlying hazardous condition was fully addressed. A safety law in New York City requires proper professional inspections of the facade of buildings every five years minimally in order to prevent a dangerous situation similar to this pedestrian accident. Building inspectors will continue their investigation into this tragedy to determine the cause of the accident with fatal injuries. In the meantime, a scaffolding was constructed around the building to prevent another immediate accident or wrongful death. You can see this article for more.

Single vehicle rollover accident kills one and injures two more victims

New York – The FDR Drive was the scene of a horrific car crash that involved a single vehicle. The driver of the car, an off-duty police officer from the NYPD, apparently lost control of the car and roller over. There was significant damage to all sides of the car and roof and the vehicle came to rest on top of the center median. Witness reports say that the accident occurred when the car hit the center guardrail but the exact cause of the collision is still under investigation. The off-duty cop who was driving suffered a severe head injury with traumatic brain damage or traumatic brain injury (TBI) according to reports. He died at the hospital after doctors and staff tried to resuscitate the car accident victim. Two passengers in the vehicle were ejected from the car and also suffered serious injuries. An off-duty fireman with FDNY suffered internal organ injuries but is expected to survive according to trauma specialists. In the meantime, a young woman passenger suffered a leg injury with a traumatic amputation of her foot. While she is also expected to survive, it is unclear whether or not surgeons were able to successfully reattach the severed limb. Police investigators are continuing their investigation into the details of the car collision in order to determine if there was reckless driving or speeding involved, in addition to whether or not drugs or drunk driving could have contributed to the crash. Mechanical failure of the car and road conditions are also factors that need extensive evaluation. Read this article and see the video for further details about the deadly rollover car accident.

Limousine crash kills passengers and pedestrians in New York

New York – The driver of a limo that ran through a stop sign is being blamed for the deadly car accident. However, the limousine company is also being investigated for possibly operating unsafe vehicles that may have contributed to the motor vehicle collision. Reports show that the car was speeding about 60 miles per hour when it didn’t stop at a stop sign and crossed straight through the intersection. It then slammed into a parked vehicle as well as several pedestrians in a parking lot. The pedestrian accident killed two of the pedestrian victims who were apparently shopping nearby. In addition, the car crash killed the driver of the limo and all of the 17 passengers in the rear of the vehicle. Unfortunately, none of the passengers in the vehicle were wearing seat belts during the impact. This left a total of 20 accident victims killed in the horrific collision.

Witnesses to the crash noted that it appeared the vehicle’s brakes may have failed. In fact, this is consistent with the fact that the limo company had racked up extensive safety violations, including negligent maintenance issues. At least one of their vehicles failed for not having properly working brakes in the recent past. Family and friends explain that at least one of the passengers in the limo messaged someone prior to the crash about the poor mechanical condition of the car. Investigators noted that the driver of the limo involved in the fatal accident did not have the proper driver’s license for the type of vehicle that he was driving. In addition, it has been noted that the very same driver was involved in a similar accident after he blew through a stop sign about three years ago. In that prior collision, one of the cars rolled over after being hit. Several people were injured at that time, including one with a head injury and another with a back injury. Bus accident injures high school students on Southern State Parkway

New York – Forty-four people suffered varying injuries in a mass casualty bus collision on Long Island. The bus was filled with high school students when it crashed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway. The bus was too tall as it attempted to drive under a bridge, causing the entire upper section of the bus to sheer off. The sudden motor vehicle accident sent the children and adult supervisors flying in all directions. Some fell into the seats and other passengers while others slammed into the windows and side of the bus. Investigators have discovered that the out-of-state bus driver was unaware that his commercial vehicle was not allowed to be driven on a parkway in New York. Concerned citizen groups believe that this constitutes a form of negligence that caused the crash. Hospital officials report that the injuries from the accident varied from broken bones to internal organ damage to spinal injuries and even head injury. They note that some of the injuries, both physical and psychological wounds, may not show themselves immediately. There were some early signs of post-traumatic stress disorder noted in addition to the physical injuries. The injured victims will require ongoing evaluation and treatment. This article explains more about the bus crash.

Car versus truck accident kills one victim in Manhattan

New York – The driver of a Mercedes car rear-ended a truck that was double-parked in the street just before 5:00 in the morning in the Harlem section of Manhattan yesterday. Reports indicate that the delivery man who was driving the truck was inside of a local business making a work delivery when he left his truck parked in the middle of the street. The driver of the car apparently didn’t see the truck and caused the rear-end collision. Her vehicle then veered across the road and crashed into a tree, causing massive damage. The front-seated passenger of the car suffered a severe head injury with fatal brain damage. He was declared dead in Harlem Hospital due to the accident injuries according to emergency department doctors. The man who was killed in the crash was identified as being from Jackson Heights in Queens, NY. The female driver also suffered facial injuries but is expected to survive. Police have arrested the woman on suspicion of drunk driving. While police will continue investigating the cause of the accident, this type of deadly motor vehicle crash will require an expert accident lawyer to determine fault. The truck driver may be considered negligent for leaving the delivery truck in the middle of the road, while the possible drunk driver may also bear fault. Downtown Manhattan scaffold accident traps and injures five pedestrians

New York – High winds swept through the city, causing a construction scaffolding collapse. The fallen scaffold debris crashed down onto five pedestrians who were walking along the sidewalk below. Two of the construction accident victims were trapped and needed to be extricated by bystanders and emergency responders. All of the injury victims were treated and taken to local New York City hospitals for evaluation and treatment. Reported injuries ranged from a head injury to broken bones to a leg injury and possible spinal injury. Outraged community leaders have pointed out that scaffold accidents and injuries should be prevented by forcing building owners and construction companies to remove unnecessary and dangerous equipment. They note that many scaffoldings have been sitting around for many years despite no active work being done on the building above. They warn that leaving these structures, that by nature are supposed to be temporary, is a dangerous practice and leaves a hazardous condition for bystanders. Authorities with the building department explain that current laws and ordinances require owners to inspect their scaffolds every day but some activists doubt that this is actually done. They feel that owners and employers are guilty of negligence that leads to such work accidents. They demand that the city inspectors deal with this problem to prevent further injury or wrongful death, claiming that ignoring the problem is also negligent.
