Bus accident injures high school students on Southern State Parkway

New York – Forty-four people suffered varying injuries in a mass casualty bus collision on Long Island. The bus was filled with high school students when it crashed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway. The bus was too tall as it attempted to drive under a bridge, causing the entire upper section of the bus to sheer off. The sudden motor vehicle accident sent the children and adult supervisors flying in all directions. Some fell into the seats and other passengers while others slammed into the windows and side of the bus. Investigators have discovered that the out-of-state bus driver was unaware that his commercial vehicle was not allowed to be driven on a parkway in New York. Concerned citizen groups believe that this constitutes a form of negligence that caused the crash. Hospital officials report that the injuries from the accident varied from broken bones to internal organ damage to spinal injuries and even head injury. They note that some of the injuries, both physical and psychological wounds, may not show themselves immediately. There were some early signs of post-traumatic stress disorder noted in addition to the physical injuries. The injured victims will require ongoing evaluation and treatment. This article explains more about the bus crash.

Deadly drag racing car crash blamed on drunk drivers

New York – Two car accident victims were killed last week on the Nassau Expressway near the border between Long Island and Queens. Five other victims were injured in the highway accident according to police reports. The two victims that were killed were a recently engaged couple that were driving home when they were hit. The collision caused their car to burst into flames and the trapped couple died in the fire. Emergency responders explained that the multi-vehicle car accident left tremendous amounts of damage and injuries ranging from broken bones to spinal injuries to critical injuries. Investigators into the cause of the fatal collision have noted several pieces of evidence that point to reckless driving, drag racing and even drunk driving. Police have arrested and charged two of the people involved in the crash. They believe that the cause of the accident was well more than just carelessness or even negligence. Prosecutors believe that the criminal actions of two of the drivers are what caused the motor vehicle accident. They believe that two of the vehicles were drag racing and lost control, slamming into the other cars and causing a chain reaction. The at-fault drivers will face criminal charges but can also face personal injury lawsuits as well as wrongful death lawsuits. See this article for more about the drunk driving accident.

Downtown Manhattan scaffold accident traps and injures five pedestrians

New York – High winds swept through the city, causing a construction scaffolding collapse. The fallen scaffold debris crashed down onto five pedestrians who were walking along the sidewalk below. Two of the construction accident victims were trapped and needed to be extricated by bystanders and emergency responders. All of the injury victims were treated and taken to local New York City hospitals for evaluation and treatment. Reported injuries ranged from a head injury to broken bones to a leg injury and possible spinal injury. Outraged community leaders have pointed out that scaffold accidents and injuries should be prevented by forcing building owners and construction companies to remove unnecessary and dangerous equipment. They note that many scaffoldings have been sitting around for many years despite no active work being done on the building above. They warn that leaving these structures, that by nature are supposed to be temporary, is a dangerous practice and leaves a hazardous condition for bystanders. Authorities with the building department explain that current laws and ordinances require owners to inspect their scaffolds every day but some activists doubt that this is actually done. They feel that owners and employers are guilty of negligence that leads to such work accidents. They demand that the city inspectors deal with this problem to prevent further injury or wrongful death, claiming that ignoring the problem is also negligent. Famous musician injured while working at a Midtown Manhattan concert

New York – The famous rock star musician, Marilyn Manson, was visiting NYC and performing a concert in a large concert ballroom when an object fell and hit him. The injured Manson explained that he suffered a head injury as well as a leg injury during the accident. Organizers say that the injuries occurred when a large, heavy stage prop fell from an unknown height onto the man below. He then fell backward onto the ground and possibly hit his head at that point. There is no indication whether or not Mr. Manson lost consciousness. The prop had been suspended by workers before the show onto a tall metal scaffolding column but then fell over and collapsed during the concert. He suffered broken bones from the falling object, including a fracture of his fibula in his leg, and required surgery. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and stabilized in the emergency room before being taken to the operating room. Hospital surgeons had to repair the leg fracture with metal hardware, leaving him disabled from the accident and unable to work. Representatives for the musician noted that he will undergo additional medical treatment such as physical therapy and possibly occupational therapy. They hope that he will be able to return to work despite having had to postpone many upcoming concerts. Further details about this fall injury are available here.

Drunk driver blamed for fatal car crash in Queens

New York – Police investigators from the NYPD have determined that an intoxicated driver caused the four car accident on the Grand Central Parkway this past Sunday. The tragic crash began when the driver of an SUV, apparently drunk, hit a second SUV truck causing a series of collisions. Several of the vehicles rolled over during the accident and 2 victims were killed, including a 34-year-old man and a teenager. Several other accident victims suffered various injuries, including at least one head injury and broken bones. Police say that reckless driving contributed to the initial crash and the driver of that first vehicle was charged with multiple driving and safety violations.

Besides for the criminal charges that the man faces, a Manhattan accident lawyer specialist explains that the intoxicated driver can face several civil lawsuits for causing the collision. These include wrongful death lawsuits by the family of the victims who were killed as well as personal injury lawsuits by the injured drunk driving accident victims. If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, you have the right to speak to an injury attorney to discuss your case. Train derailment in Brooklyn causes mass casualty incident

New York – Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) company officials confirm that there were over 100 injury victims from this week’s train accident. Reports show that the LIRR train derailed in Brooklyn during morning rush hour as it pulled into the station. Inspectors from the transportation and safety bureaus were unsure as to what caused the crash but they note that the train overran a stopping block. They explain that the bumper is there as a safety design to prevent accidents and collisions. However, it is unclear if the accident occurred due to speed, driver error, broken equipment from negligent maintenance or even human error. Emergency responders from the scene transported the crash victims to various hospitals with wide ranging injuries, including spinal injuries such as neck and back pain, head injury, dental injuries and suspected broken bones. Drug and alcohol testing was underway for the train engineer, according to officials with the National Transportation Safety Board. You can read more about this derailed train here.
