Apparent reckless driver kills unborn baby, injures mother in car crash

New York – Staten Island’s Hylan Boulevard was the scene of a horrific two-car motor vehicle accident (MVA). One of the cars, an SUV, was apparently speeding when the driver lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into another vehicle. The driver of that first car suffered accident injuries, including a possible broken bone. However, the second vehicle, also an SUV, contained two accident victims that suffered much more severe injuries. The male driver of that car suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital. His female front-seated passenger was pregnant at the time of the SUV accident and was also rushed to a trauma center. Doctors were forced to perform an emergency cesarean section delivery of the baby in an attempt to save the baby’s life. However, hospital officials explain that the newborn infant died of the injuries sustained in the MVA. The nature of the fatal wounds is still under investigation. Officials investigating the car collision believe that the first car was being driven by a reckless driver and that led to the SUV crash. The reckless driving together with the fact that the man was an unlicensed speeding driver has many concerned. Safety advocates have demanded immediate action to remove dangerous drivers from the roads and justice in this wrongful death case. Find out more about the collision and investigation here.

Driver under the influence of drugs crashes head-on into another vehicle

New York – This horrific head-on collision occurred when a speeding driver entered the Queens-Midtown tunnel heading in the wrong direction. The wrong-way accident vehicle slammed into a car coming in the opposite direction, when it couldn’t swerve out of the way in time. A dashcam video of the car accident was taken from the car that was struck by the wrong-way driver. The video shows the car crash and the vehicles colliding and ultimately coming to an abrupt halt. Police indicated that the driver of the car that entered the tunnel in the wrong direction was high on drugs. They believe that he had been using both cocaine and marijuana at the time of the motor vehicle collision. He apparently fled the scene of the accident with injuries. The hit-and-run accident was witnessed and a police officer who had just entered the tunnel stopped and arrested the fleeing man. In addition, that driver was apparently unlicensed and using his father’s vehicle. It is unclear if the father was aware or gave permission to the unlicensed man to use the car. Likewise, it is not certain whether or not the parent knew that his son would be driving while under the influence of drugs. Specifics of the injuries suffered by the car accident victim are not clear. However, trauma doctors note that this type of head-on accident can cause traumatic brain injury, spinal injuries and broken bones as well as internal injuries in the abdomen. See this article and video for more about this hit-and-run accident.

Bicycle accidents, broken bones and traumatic brain injuries

As warm weather moves in, increased bike accidents become more common and lead to serious accident injuries. Statistics show huge increases in the numbers and severity of these accidents despite safety efforts. Experts note that children and adults are wearing helmets and other safety equipment more than in the past. None-the-less, some have pointed to worsening speeding drivers, reckless driving and hazardous conditions that contribute to injuries and wrongful deaths during road accidents involving bicycles. They explain that a car crash involving a bicyclist is much more likely to cause serious or life threatening injury when the vehicle is speeding or if there is a distracted driver behind the wheel. Studies into bicycle collisions show wounds that range from lacerations that can cause nerve damage, to broken bones, to neck and back injuries and even head injury with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Doctors say that helmets have improved the outcomes for accident victims injured in a bicycle accident. However, high speed motor vehicle collisions can still lead to these injuries. This article explains more about the recent research into bike accidents.

Hit-and-run car crash in Far Rockaway leaves pedestrian with critical injuries

New York – Police in Queens, NY explain that a young woman car accident victim is left fighting for her life in the hospital after being hit by a car. The pedestrian was walking along when a speeding driver struck her and sent her flying approximately 10 feet in the air. Witnesses say that the victim was left unconscious and with multiple severe injuries from the accident. She was treated on the scene by paramedics and taken by ambulance to the hospital emergency room where she was admitted. The car then continued speeding away from the accident scene and was followed by two good Samaritans. The bystanders called police, who arrived to arrest the suspect and impound his vehicle. They have charged the driver with multiple counts, including leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.

Officials in New York City have become quite concerned about hit-and-run accident incidents and have promised to crack down on the problem. They are now considering increasing the fines and penalties for a driver who flees the scene of a collision. They hope that this will prevent further incidences. A top injury law firm in Manhattan has been fighting for a crackdown against hit-and-run drivers. They explain that these drivers must face stiff penalties, including imprisonment, loss of a driver’s license, fines and streamlined personal injury lawsuits filed against them. You can read about the city council’s current proposal to double the fines against these negligent drivers due to this recent pedestrian accident here.

Multiple injuries after drag racing car crash on Long Island

New York – Police in Hempstead, NY responded to a car accident that was apparently caused by two vehicles that were drag racing on public streets. Nassau County police note that car racing on public streets is illegal due to the dangers that it creates for other motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The high speed nature of these types of motor vehicle accidents makes them even more serious, even deadly. According to experts, a speeding driver is bad enough, but add to it the adrenaline rush and competitive edge of the racing drivers, it makes for a dangerous cocktail that can injure and kill. Emergency medical responders arrived with several ambulances to treat the injured driver and passengers of the car accident. They report that one of the cars struck a utility pole and left several people in the vehicle with extensive injuries. The female driver suffered the most serious of the car crash injuries. Police have indicated that the other car fled the scene of the collision and that driver is being sought out by investigators. Public safety advocates say that reckless driving, including car racers, are an all-too-common problem on the highways and local streets. They have demanded more action by police and governmental officials to secure the roads against negligent drivers. The injured driver in this case has been charged with several violations, including reckless endangerment, reckless driving and others. The woman can also face a personal injury lawsuit from the other injured victims due to her negligence. See details about the car race collision here.
